Librarian shakes things up

A former Cupertino Library employee was among the Movers and Shakers Award-winners recognized in this month’s Library Journal. The award highlights 50 individuals who help move library work forward, as advocates, community builders, change agents, innovators, educators and “ban battlers.”

Clare Varesio, library services manager for the Santa Clara County Library District and former community librarian responsible for Cupertino Library, served as the point person on two major health-related initiatives in 2023. One was a partnership with the Santa Clara County Behavioral Health Services Department to bring mental health access programs to district libraries. Varesio also helped organize community workshops on administering the anti-opioid overdose drug naloxone—also called Narcan—to someone experiencing an overdose. Nearly 400 community members learned how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to safely administer the life-saving nasal spray.
