After almost 30 years in business on Main Street in Milpitas, family-owned O’Neil’s Lock & Key is closing and moving to Santa Clara on Nov. 8.

Mark and Kathlene O’Neil began offering mobile locksmith service on Jan. 1, 1980 and in 1986 opened up shop at 158 S. Main St. for walk-in customers. A rent increase from new ownership of the building and a recent fire at an adjacent business are the reasons for the move, the semi-retired couple said.

“We want to thank everybody in Milpitas,” Kathlene O’Neil said. “We know the move might be hard for some of them.”

Most of their business these days comes from commercial customers, surveillance systems and card access systems, said Mark O’Neil, who has been in the locksmith business more than 50 years. His parents owned a lock and key shop in Mountain View on Castro Street.

The O’Neils lived in Milpitas from 1979 to 1984 and have been in Fremont for 31 years.

The business is relocating to 891 Laurelwood Road, off Lafayette Street, in Santa Clara. All five employees and Ron Taniguchi, who runs the day-to-day operations, are moving over to the new location.

The phone number will stay the same, (408) 946-0522. Business hours will remain at 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays.
